Offensive Scouting Report
The more you watch Jake the more you love him, most notably due to his release. He possesses adequate height with quality bulk and the frame to add strength and weight. He possesses very good athleticism, good enough to be employed as a dual-threat, but is a passer first, runner second. He possesses great speed for the position. He shows good command of the scheme, gets the ball out quickly and shows he can work from one target to the next. He does not take many risks with the ball and makes good decisions on the run when flushed or pressured. He recognizes coverage and where to go pre-snap and possesses a calm and cool demeanor. He throws with authority, re-sets and shuffles to create throwing lanes and get the ball out without happy feet under pressure. He is a tough runner who does not shy away from contact. He is balanced and quick in his set-up. He plays exclusively in the shotgun and it’s tough to gauge drop speed and footwork from under center. He wastes little time getting set from snap to throw and is very efficient. He possesses a smooth, quick, strong delivery that is over-the-top, but compact and consistent. He shows proper ball carriage at chest level and a natural throwing motion that is efficient. Jake possesses the arm to make most, if not all of the necessary college level throws with zip and natural wrist snap. He is capable of driving the ball deep and outside of the numbers when his feet are set. He flashes power vertically and his arm strength is adequate-to-good. When his feet are set, Jake is very efficient within the strike zone. He flashes zip and touch and is capable of fitting the ball into tight spots and leading receivers with a catchable ball, especially on movement routes. His zone-read play fakes are sound and he is a running threat, warranting attention in this area. Dual-threat skills give him upside here. Jake is a nice blend of arm and athleticism. He’s an elite runner with a good football I.Q. and very productive.
Defensive Scouting Report
Jake may be one of the most gifted two-way players this class has to offer with a terrific blend of instincts, feet, speed and quickness. As explosive of a player he is on offense and as many plays as he makes as a quarterback and wide receiver, his upside on defense as a cornerback/receiver is where we envision him landing. He is tall and wiry, very good size for a corner. He shows the ability to turn and run without losing too much in transition for a taller Safety. Does a terrific job of pressing receivers and taking them out of their routes. Shows fluid hips and is very athletic. Has very good closing burst when the ball is in the air. Can run with the fastest of receivers downfield. He has explosive top-end speed and fluid change-of-direction skills for a tall corner. Can mirror and jam. Feet are always moving and he will flip his hips and drive to the WR’s hip with great quickness. Jake has tremendous ball skills. He has exceptional hands and leaping ability. He has a lot of big play flair and will make plays with the ball in his hands after an interception or even as a return specialist. He will surprise you with his willingness and feistiness in run support. Efficient tackler that won’t shy away. On offense he can impact a game out of the backfield or in the passing game. Is a smooth gliding type runner with vision to exploit cutback lanes and the lateral agility to avoid taking shots in-line. Isn’t necessarily a between the tackles runner, but can jump cut and squirt through creases to reach the second level. This is a player that plays with terrific confidence and passion and he knows he is good. Will take risks on defense because he is gifted and likes the challenge of making plays. We feel Jake will see the field early in some capacity and has the upside to become a serious FBS level premier player.
