Owen Smith is exceptionally tall (6-foot) for a middle school center, and he’s a manhandler. Once he gets his claws into a defender he’ll take him for a ride. Has a strong upper body and creates movement. His good first step allows him to pick up stunting defensive linemen. He’s exceptional on the down block, destroying defenders. Works his body into position after throwing his initial punch. Executes the shotgun snap to perfection, and can step as he delivers the ball without losing fluidity. Can usually chip off the combo block effectively and get to the second level. Has enough mobility to venture across the field for an occasional downfield block. He’s solid in pass protection with upside. Smith is dedicated at working hard to improve his foot quickness and agility. His wide wingspan makes him difficult for pass rushers to get around in his limited area of responsibility. Demonstrates great leadership skills and plays aggressively, especially at the line of scrimmage. He’s a take-charge guy who will be able to handle blocking calls and adjustments at the next level. Smith has all the tangibles to develop into a big-time college center.
